Ever wish you could buy a $200 bottle of sake in front of an overgrown, thong-wearing man?
A new specialty store called Sake Nomi might give you that chance. Set to open this month in Seattle's Pioneer Square district, Sake Nomi will carry roughly 150 brands of sake -- many of them upscale -- and will offer tastings and clinics such "Sake 101," a class teaching customers how the Japanese rice beverage is made.
Founder Johnnie Stroud, whose business card reads "sake enthusiast," believes there's a niche for a sake store that takes a wine-shop approach.
"Our intent is to make it an unpretentious place where people can learn about sake without being preached to," Stroud said.
Stroud will also try to inform customers about the drink's health benefits. He said sake has been identified as one reason sumo wrestlers have famously clear complexions.
With this in mind, Stroud is considering offering a regular "sumo night," where the wrestling matches are broadcast on big screen televisions.
"I'm not sure that's an attractive thing to drink to," Stroud said, "but we'll find out."
