FeBREWary continues at Sak Nomi, with new sake arrivals, special offers, and some fun events we hope you'll join us for.

Here's a quick rundown:

New "Good Times" Menu
It's dyn-o-mite!

Born Gold If there's a trend to the flavor profiles to the selections on this week's glass pour menu, it's toward the mellow and savory (one of which is mentioned in the special offer below).  Take some "me time" and come experience a mid-Winter break and vacation in a glass.

Seikyo "Omachi" Namazake and
Houraisen "Wa"
Special offers on some special brews

Some of the seasonal Spring release namazake are due to arrive soon, including one of our best-selling favorites, Seikyo "Omachi" Namazake.  As in years past, we anticipate very limited availability in Washington (last year, we had to hijack some of Oregon's allotment), so we want to give you a quick heads up, to give you an opportunity to stake your claim on some of this amazing brew.

Our notes are as follows:  Soft and citrusy, with a luxurious, almost viscous mouthfeel.  Notes of grapefruit and lemon throughout, creating a wonderful, beguiling contrast between the sharpness of the acidic citrus elements and the silky texture.  Traces of minerality and astringency on the edges make it an ideal pairing for oysters on the half-shell.
Price: $52/720 ml bottle
(10% discount for 6 or more bottles)
Order by: Monday, Feb. 25
Availability for pick up: Approx. 2 weeks

In addition, one of Johnnie's personal favorites/"desert island" sake, Houraisen WaHouraisen "Wa" Junmai Ginjo is being offered to us by our distributor at a special "closeout" discount, and we wanted to pass those savings along to you.

As you're aware, we generally advise consuming a bottle of sake within a year or so of its shipping date.  However, this "standard" varies a bit from bottle to bottle, and we feel like some of the higher-end bottles are so well constructed that they often drink superbly beyond that period.

Houraisen "Wa" (Harmony) Junmai Ginjo is a case in point.  It's soft, full, rich, and mildly sweet, with a gentle acidity.  It's a great example of a sake that shows a lot of fruit (definitely a grape thing going on there), yet it is not unpleasantly or cloyingly sweet.  A mellow sake that is meant for slow, relaxed enjoyment, the "wa" in the name means "harmony," and comes from the proverb, "Harmony produces good sake."

The lot our distributor is offering us is 17 months old, and since we've been drinking and selling it, we can confidently vouch for its quality.  Normally priced at $65/720 ml bottle, we're able to sell it now for $50/bottle, while supplies last.  (Note: It's also featured on this week's menu, so you can come in for a "test drive," if you're so inclined.)
Order by: 6 pm Thurs., Feb 21 for Feb. 22 (Fri.) delivery, or Sunday, Feb. 24 for Feb. 26 (Tues.) delivery.

If you're interested in snagging either one of these sake, please contact us ASAP.  We don't mind holding and consolidating orders for you, and we won't charge you for the sake until we take delivery.

"Pop Up" Izakaya event with Six Coins Japanese Food Truck
February 23 (Sat.)Six Coins

We are thrilled to welcome Six Coins Japanese Food Truck back to Sak Nomi, for what is quickly becoming a monthly "pop up" izakaya event, on Saturday, February 23 @ 6-9 pm.

The Six Coins folks will be offering a variety of sake-friendly appetizers, sushi rolls, and udon from $2 and up.

In addition, we will also be featuring the new-to-Washington and incredibly versatile Hosui Tokubetsu Honjozo, so try a glass and see for yourself what's so tokubetsu ("special") about it.

Sak Nomi Cinema:
The Harimaya Bridge
Sunday, Feb. 24 @ 4 pm

Please join us Sunday, February 24 for a special Sunday matinee edition of Sak Nomi Cinema featuring 2009's The Harimaya Bridge.

This beautiful, quiet film was written and directed by Aaron Woolfolk, who taught English in Shikoku's Kochi prefecture, where the story takes place.

To enhance your viewing pleasure, we'll also be featuring the elegant and delectable Bijofu ("The Gentleman") Junmai, also from Kochi.

We plan on starting the film around 4 pm, so come early and grab a seat and settle in for a mellow, civilized way to bid the weekend adieu and ease on into the work week ahead.

Coming Events:

"Smile for Japan:" Sunday, March 10
Please join us for this special gathering of Japanese craft artists and musicians in support of the folks in Tohoku still recuperating from the devastation of the 2011 tsunami and earthquake.  We'll be featuring sake from the region and our good friends from Six Coins Japanese Food Truck are scheduled to be on hand, as well.  For details, keep an eye on Facebook, and please feel free to contact us.

Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you soon!

February 6
Greetings, Nomidachi!Sake Nomi Display Sign

We hope you have enjoyed a "super" start to all things February, and though it's the shortest month, we'll do our best to pack it full of sake-related activities.

Here's a quick rundown of some things that are coming up at Sak Nomi this week (and beyond):

Wii Wednesday
And, Jah Bob's birthday!

Bob with guitar and spliff As is the weekly custom, we'll be have the Wii fired up this evening for some climate-controlled virtual recreation.

February 6 also happens to be Bob Marley's birthday (born on this date in 1945), so chances are the Sak Nomi soundtrack will have a heavy reggae flavor.

Come on down, display your gaming skills, and help us celebrate the life of one of our favorite artists.

Sak Nomi Cinema/Sounds of Sak:
Bob Marley Edition

It's First Thursday ArtWalk, too!

Whilst out and about patronizing the unique and diverse galleries in the neighborhood this Thursday, February 7, please make time to stop by for a drink and check out some footage of Bob Marley in action.

From 6 pm we'll be screening Marley, the 2012 documentary Marley movie poster directed by Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland).  This gorgeously produced film "does what is probably the best possible job of documenting an important life," according to film critic Roger Ebert.

Packed with humor, heartbreak, and terrific music, Marley has all the elements (excepting the Japanese back-scrubbing, of course) that we think make it perfect for viewing with some chilled sake and tasty Japanese microbrews.

We'll follow that up with Bob and the Wailers' iconic 1977 performance at London's Rainbow Theatre in the film, Bob Marley and the Wailers Live at the Rainbow.

Enter the big "Black Dragon"
Special tasting Fri.- Sun.

New to Sak Nomi's roster, Kokuryu Junmai Ginjo (Black Dragon), from Ishikawa prefecture, is a renowned brew that quickly became an all-time favorite.

Kokuryu Junmai Ginjo From the brewer of legendary label, Ishidaya (at one time, there was a 3-year waiting list to be able to purchase a bottle!), Kokuryu junmai ginjo features a soft, silky mouthfeel, with a mellow sweetness and settled richness on the palate.  It is clean, sleek, and full of umami!  The unique 720 ml bottle design results in a very pleasant, melodious sound when the first couple pours are served.

Due to limited availability, we haven't had a chance to feature Black Dragon by the glass on our weekly menu much, but that is about the change for the better with the introduction of a 1.8 L bottle size to the Washington market. ($85/1.8 L bottle; $42/720 ml bottle; $12/4 oz. pour)

Please stop by for a taste this weekend, Friday thru Sunday, and see for yourself what all the fuss is about.

Sak Sunday School
Sunday, Feb. 10 @ 2 pm

We'll be preaching the gospel of drinking the good stuff at our next edition of our "Sake 101" class, which we'll just call "Sak Sunday School" this time around.

If you're interested in a comprehensive introduction to sake basics that will enhance your enjoyment of this magical, mystical brew, please join us Sunday, February 10 @ 2 pm, and we'll do our best to "break it down" for you.

From how sake is brewed and classified, to optimal serving temperatures, drinking vessels, and traditional sake drinking etiquette, we'll cover it all, while keeping our tasting palates pleasantly lubricated.

Cost for the approx. 90 minutes seminar is $40/person and includes all sake (we'll taste a bunch!) and class materials.

Please reserve your spot (or spots -- bring a friend!) by contacting us (phone: 206-467-7253; e-mail: info@sakenomi.us) by Friday, February 8.  Kanpai!
