March 2013

March 27
Hey there, Nomidachi!Sake Nomi Display Sign

Busted brackets got you down?  Not to worry, as March Gladness continues at Sak Nomi.

Inspired by this wonderful weather, we are feeling the invigorating renewal that this time of year can bring, and we present some lively sake selections for you to experience some Spring in a glass.

We've got some fantastic food-related events happening in the next few days, too (Did we mention that they're also grrrreat values?), and we hope you'll have the opportunity to join us for a taste.

Please note that we will be CLOSED Sunday, March 31 to drink sake (of course!) and spend some time catching up with family (Heeeeere's Nana!) and friends.

Thanks so much for your continued patronage and readership, and we hope to see you again soon!

Spring has officially sprung, and with the tip-off of the NCAA basketball tourney, March Gladness continues.

At Sak Nomi, we celebrate this month with the introduction of new brews, new food vendors, and by re-acquainting ourselves with some "old friends."

We look forward to pouring you a glass and catching up with you soon!

March Gladness continues, and with all the St. Pat's activity (not to mention copious amounts of precipitation), everything seems to be taking on an emerald hue in the Great Northwest.

Of course, Sake Nomi is no exception, and we're featuring greenish colored sake, green sake bottles, and even "green" sushi in the coming days.

Take a look at what we've got going on, and please stop by to share a glass, when you have the chance.

March Gladness is upon us, and we're excited about the numerous events and new sake and beer selections the month promises.

In addition to some of the things mentioned below, don't forget to drop in for a round of fun and games on Wii Wednesday, and please make time to stop by during the First Thursday ArtWalk, when we'll have something called Sak Nomi Samurai Cinema going on.

This week's menu (which starts Tuesday) is a delicious collection of various styles and flavor profiles, and, in conjunction with the "Smile Japan!" tsunami relief event on Sunday, we'll be featuring brews from the most severely affected regions of Tohoku.

As ever, thanks so much for your support and referrals, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

'Just a quick blast to let you know that March Gladness begins today, and we're hoping you'll have a chance to stop by and treat yourself to some of the goodies we've got in store.

Tedorigawa Kinka We'll be featuring lots of new sake and seasonal releases throughout the month, as well as celebrating the return of some difficult to procure favorites, beginning this weekend with Tedorigawa Kinka ("Gold Blossom"), the daiginjo namazake favorite from Ishikawa prefecture.

Saturday, March 2 is the first Sounders' home game (7:30 pm start) of the 2013 season, and this is the year we pledge to become more knowledgeable and enthusiastic supporters of this impressive club.  Please keep Sak Nomi in mind as a pre- or post-match meeting spot throughout the season, and "Scarves Up," or whatever.  Remember, too, that when you "GIVE US YOUR FULL 90," we'll give you at least 9 glasses of $10 sake.

Drinking at Sak Nomi on Sunday afternoon can be a relaxing, mellow, spiritually rejuvenating, and delightfully adult affair (since we are a "21 and over" establishment).

This Sunday, March 3 is celebrated as "Girls' Day" in Japan, and Hello Kitty Hinna it involves dolls, and sweets, and all kinds of kimono refinery for the little ones.

This Sunday, in celebration of the Ladies (that's all the "girls" 21 + years of age, and old enough to know better), your female companion's first glass pour will be 21% off.

Seikyo "Omachi" Namazake and
Houraisen "Wa"
Special offers still available on some special brews

Some of the seasonal Spring release namazake are due to arrive soon, including one of our best-selling favorites, Seikyo "Omachi" Namazake.  As in years past, we anticipate very limited availability in Washington (last year, we had to hijack some of Oregon's allotment), so we want to give you a quick heads up, to give you an opportunity to stake your claim on some of this amazing brew.

Our notes are as follows:  Soft and citrusy, with a luxurious, almost viscous mouthfeel.  Notes of grapefruit and lemon throughout, creating a wonderful, beguiling contrast between the sharpness of the acidic citrus elements and the silky texture.  Traces of minerality and astringency on the edges make it an ideal pairing for oysters on the half-shell.
Price: $52/720 ml bottle
(10% discount for 6 or more bottles)
Order by: Monday, March 4
Availability for pick up: Approx. 1 week

In addition, one of Johnnie's personal favorites/"desert island" sake, Houraisen WaHouraisen "Wa" Junmai Ginjo is being offered to us by our distributor at a special "closeout" discount, and we wanted to pass those savings along to you.

As you're aware, we generally advise consuming a bottle of sake within a year or so of its shipping date.  However, this "standard" varies a bit from bottle to bottle, and we feel like some of the higher-end bottles are so well constructed that they often drink superbly beyond that period.

Houraisen "Wa" (Harmony) Junmai Ginjo is a case in point.  It's soft, full, rich, and mildly sweet, with a gentle acidity.  It's a great example of a sake that shows a lot of fruit (definitely a grape thing going on there), yet it is not unpleasantly or cloyingly sweet.  A mellow sake that is meant for slow, relaxed enjoyment, the "wa" in the name means "harmony," and comes from the proverb, "Harmony produces good sake."

The lot our distributor is offering us is 17 months old, and since we've been drinking and selling it, we can confidently vouch for its quality.  Normally priced at $65/720 ml bottle, we're able to sell it now for $50/bottle, while supplies last.  (Note: It's also featured on this week's menu, so you can come in for a "test drive," if you're so inclined.)
Order by: Sunday, March 3 for March 5 (Tues.) delivery.

If you're interested in snagging either one of these sake, please contact us ASAP.  We don't mind holding and consolidating orders for you, and we won't charge you for the sake until we take delivery.

Please don't forget this coming event:

"Smile for Japan:" Sunday, March 10
Please join us for this special gathering of Japanese craft artists and musicians in support of the folks in Tohoku still recuperating from the devastation of the 2011 tsunami and earthquake.  We'll be featuring sake from the region, and our good friends from Six Coins Japanese Food Truck will be serving their terrific food, as well.  For details, keep an eye on Facebook, and please feel free to contact us.

Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you soon!
