There's still plenty of sake-related activity going on during this year's version of Saketoberfest, and we mention a few below.

Please Note: We will be CLOSED, Sunday, Oct. 13 in order to do some, ahem, "research and development."  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we cordially invite you to get in here sometime before then and partake with us in the sake-centric amusements.

New Week, New Menu: Starting Today!
Since we're usually closed Mondays, Tuesday is the day we revise the weekly rotating menu.  This week features some real treats, including:

*The very last batch of 2013's best-selling Masumi Arabashiri "First Run" Junmai Ginjo Nama Genshu.

*A few selections well-suited to warming up in the ol' kansuke.

Kikusui Junmai Ginjo *The re-introduction of some Niigata classics, including Kikusui Junmai Ginjo (you know, the gorgeous blue bottle), and Johnnie's all-time favorite honjozo, Hakkaisan.

Oct. 9 (Wed.):  Wii Wednesday/"Sounds of Sake"

On (most) Wednesdays there is Wii, and it is (mostly) good.

This Wednesday, Oct. 9, in celebration of John Lennon's birthday, his music (and, perhaps, some video) will feature prominently in the mix.  And yes, there are many John Lennon and Beatles' tunes that are quite suitable to sake-drinking.

Don't forget to ask Johnnie to show you the copy of John Lennon's sketchbook from when he traveled to Japan with Yoko Ono.

Oct. 11-12 (Fri.- Sat.): Regional Sake Tasting Featuring Niigata Brews
Which leads nicely into . . .

Oct. 12 (Sat.):  Niigata Sake & Box Nature Sushi
(from 6 pm)

In the days before well-developed transportation systems, the regionality in Japanese sake came into being, in part, because the sake developed to accompany and accentuate the flavors of the local/regional cuisine.

For example, in areas close to the coast, where people were eating lots of fresh seafood, the sake produced tended to be light and clean to accompany those delicate flavors.

This Saturday, October 12, we're thrilled to once again feature the sushi stylings of Chef Taka and Box Nature Sushi, supplemented by the classic light, clean flavors of some renowned Niigata sake brands.

We hope you'll join us!

Re-Scheduled:  Oct. 17 (Thurs.): "Sake Explorations: Yamahai & Kimoto, aka 'Bring on the Funk!'" @ 7 pm.
The next session of our ongoing sake-centric seminar series will feature sake brewed in the yamahai and kimoto styles, both known for their full-bodied boldness, tanginess, and straight up "funk."  We'll explain about what makes them this way and demonstrate why many make fantastic candidates for kanzake (warm sake).  The cost for this approx. 90-minute session is $40 (plus tax)/person.  Space will be limited, so please RSVP by Monday, Oct. 14. (info@sakenomi.us/206-467-7253)

And, don't forget:

Oct. 26 (Sat.): Halloween Yakitori with Umami Kushi
We're still working out the details, but please be sure to stay tuned and save this date!!

While it's true that EVERY day is "Sake Day" at Sak Nomi, this past Tuesday, Oct. 1 was officially "Sake Day" and we hope you commemorated the occasion with a glass or two of the good stuff.

However, if it got past you, never fear: Saketoberfest continues!

Tonight, Oct. 3 (Thurs.): Official launch & tasting of Fuku Chitose "Happy Owl" Yamahai Junmai
Please join us on this First Thursday ArtWalk as we welcome Fuku Chitose yamahai junmaiCertified Sake Professional Jennifer Ross, presenting this new-to-Washington brew.  From a small brewery (how freaking cute and charming is this website?!) in Fukui prefecture, we've quietly previewed this sake for the last week or so and find it fantastic at room temperature and a little warmer -- perfectly autumnal.  Tasting will begin sometime between 5:30- 6:00 pm.

Oct. 4- 6 (Fri.- Sun.):
Celebrating "Sake Day" with Born
The folks at brewery Katoukichibee Shouten (say that 5 times fast -- we dare you!), also in Fukui prefecture, tout their brews as being well suited to celebrate auspicious occasions.  We can't argue, and their "Gold" non-charcoal filtered junmai daiginjo and Muroka Nama Genshu (unfiltered, unpasteurized, undiluted) junmai daiginjo are two of the tastiest sake available in Washington.  We'll be pouring both this weekend in honor of Sake Day/Saketoberfest, so if you're able to stop by, please make sure to inquire about the special "off menu" Born Yume wa Masayume "Dreams Come True."

This 1-liter bottle normally retails for $500 and is famous in Japan for being used by celebrities and elite athletes to celebrate auspicious achievements, and the Prime Minister of Japan has presented it to the US President on the occasion of his inauguration.

This time 'round, we got a special deal from our distributor, making it possible for us to pour this treat by the glass ($16/2 oz.; $32/4 oz.), and if you'd like to reserve a taste, please give us a shout!
